What Is a Glow Plug?
This is a 12-volt diesel engine glow plug — an essential heating element designed specifically for Volkswagen and Audi 1.9L Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engines with codes 1Z, AHU, and ALH. It pre-heats the air and fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber to ensure reliable ignition, especially during cold starts.
Engine & Vehicle Compatibility
These glow plugs fit VW and Audi 4-cylinder VE (Rotary Pump) TDI engines built from the 1990s through the early 2000s:
- 1Z Engine (1991–1996) — Early European Audi 80/A4 and early VW Passat
- AHU Engine (1996–2000) — MK3 VW Jetta and Passat B4
- ALH Engine (1998–2006) — MK4 VW Golf, Jetta, and New Beetle
⚠️ Important: These will not fit 2004+ "Pumpe Düse" (PD) style engines, which use a completely different 5V or 7V glow plug system.

How the Glow Plug System Works (ECU-Controlled)
In 1Z, AHU, and ALH engines, the glow plug system is fully managed by the ECU across two phases:
- Preglow Phase — Activates when you turn the ignition to "On", triggered when ambient temps drop below 48°F (9°C) to ensure a clean cold start.
- Afterglow Phase — Plugs stay energized for up to 3 minutes after startup (or until RPMs exceed 2,500). This reduces white smoke, cuts hydrocarbon emissions, and smooths rough cold idle.
Symptoms of a Failed Glow Plug
Each engine requires 4 glow plugs (one per cylinder). A single failed plug can cause:
- Hard or delayed cold-weather starts
- Rough, loud, or misfiring idle for the first few seconds
- Solid or flashing glow plug warning light on the dash
- Check engine light with fault codes P0380 or P0673
Pro Tips
- 🔧 Replace as a complete set of 4 to keep cylinder resistance balanced
- 🔧 Apply a small amount of anti-seize grease on the threads to prevent seizing in the aluminum cylinder head
- 🔧 Find your engine code on the sticker attached to your timing belt cover
