What Is a Mass Air Flow Sensor?

The MAF sensor (also called an air meter or mass air flow meter) measures the volume and density of air entering the engine. The ECU uses this data to calculate the correct fuel injection quantity. On Common Rail TDI engines, a dirty or failed MAF causes the ECU to miscalculate fuelling — resulting in black smoke, rough idle, reduced power, poor MPG, and often a limp-mode fault.
