What Does Relay #21 Do?
Relay #21 (OEM part number 191953227) is a standard 4-pin flasher/hazard relay used across classic VAG platforms. It controls the rhythmic on/off blinking of your turn signals and hazard warning lights using an internal thermal or electronic timer circuit. It is designed specifically for standard incandescent bulbs — see the LED note below.
Common Failure Symptoms
- ⚡ Rapid / hyper-flashing — turn signals blink too fast (also check for a burned-out bulb first)
- 💡 Solid lights — hazards or turn signals illuminate but don’t blink
- ❌ No lights at all — signals fail to illuminate or click when the stalk is pressed
- 🔊 Buzzing noise — continuous loud buzz from the fuse box area
⚠️ LED Upgrade Warning
If you’ve installed LED turn signal bulbs, Relay #21 will hyper-flash — LEDs draw far less current than incandescent bulbs, and this relay is load-dependent. To fix the flash rate with LEDs, you need an LED-rated (load-independent) flasher relay instead. This OEM unit is for incandescent bulb setups only.
